I was very fortunate to teach art to the 3rd and 5th grade classes. The primary teacher requested a lesson in tangles, and working the 3d shapes into the students math lesson on geometry. Armed with examples from fellow artists, my doodles, and images from Pinterest I was sure to get their interest. We talked about patterns in the classroom, line and shadow. I quickly demonstarted a tangle based on the shelving unit, and the students were eager to pratice.
After a few minutes of practice, Each of the students received a cardstock template of a small box. The class was quiet, so quiet the teacher commented that she had not seen this level of concentration in a long time. Within 30 minutes a few of the students had completed their work and requested help on constructing the box.
